18th century oak chip carved candle box

An oak chip carved candle box from the 2nd half of the 18th century.

This is a real tour-de-force of chip carving, with a lovely dark patina. It’s a very tactile piece.

Probably Dutch.

Provenance: from the collection of the furniture historian, R.W. Symonds (1889-1958).

Dimension: 14 inches long, 5 1/2 inches wide, 3 1/2 inches deep.
