A mid 18th. century oak salt or candle box.
This Welsh salt box has a leather hinged top and a lower drawer.
As salt needed to be kept dry, it was stored in a special box inside the fire place which was often a display item with a decorative hangar. The inverted sweet heart on this example is often found on treen candle or salt boxes from Monmouthshire.
